Why Modelight

We are not a typical creative agency. We think like engineers.

Since 2008 we have been creating 3D animations and visualizations for manufacturers. We start from CAD files, not from a mood board: we show cross-sections, assembly and how mechanisms work. We explain technological processes, present procedures in a simple way and show solutions a conventional camera cannot reach.

Where 3D creative helps

01 · EDUCATION

A phenomenon seen from inside

Cross-section, flow, process phases. Every moment can be paused and discussed.

02 · INSTRUCTION

A procedure step by step

Operation, assembly and safety rules, before anyone touches the equipment.

03 · R&D

A concept before the prototype

A solution from drawings shown in motion and to scale, for a proposal or a report.

04 · TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

An invention industry understands

How it works and where the advantage lies, in a few dozen seconds of conversation.

05 · TRADE SHOWS AND CONFERENCES

Screen, poster, print

A loop for the monitor, a render for the banner, a clip for the talk, all from one model.

06 · IMAGE

Modernity you can see

Open days, lobby screens, the website and social media.

Interactive animation · e-learning

Scroll. You control the animation.

Animation driven by code

The user controls the flow: scrolls, pauses, rewinds and returns to the key phase of the process.

Ready for e-learning

The viewer learns how the device works at their own pace, step by step, instead of watching a film from start to finish.

On every platform

Runs in the browser: on a website, in an e-learning platform, on a tablet at the workstation and on a touchscreen.

Aviation and innovation

concept visualizationexplainerinvestor presentation

How do you convince investors of a system that cannot be photographed yet? The ATS aircraft towing animation became a proof of concept: it helped secure funding in the USA, and the test prototype at an airport in Oklahoma turned out to match what the animation had shown earlier. The same models produced print visualizations and graphics for the patent application.

Machinery and drives

advertising creativeproduct visualizationexplainer

A machine has to be understood, but also remembered. Transforming KAAST machine tools into robots made the product the hero of a campaign, and the story proved strong enough to get a second episode. For AFL Motors, one model built from CAD files fed the advertising, catalogues, online shop and trade show stand, showing airflow and geometry that a photo cannot capture.

Automotive and vehicles

Components hidden under the body cannot be shown without taking the car apart. The 360 animation for Knauf Industries instantly shows where the EPP part sits and what it does, without cutting the body or long descriptions. For Tip-Topol, the camera drives under a moving vehicle and shows the suspension air bellows where they actually work, something no real camera can film.

Industrial and technological processes

process animationcross-sectioneducation

On a trade show stand a boiler looks like a cabinet with doors, and the whole design advantage sits in the burner. A cross-section animation opens the unit in front of visitors and explains a process that words cannot show. For Hexonic, one set of models produced cross-sections, a heat exchange animation and packshots for the new brand identity.

Stand design for industry trade shows

We create graphics for large-format print, catalogues and trade show leaflets. 3D creative in the form of animation draws attention on the TV screens at the stand. Click a photo to enlarge it.

HVAC and heat exchange

explainerbuilding cross-sectiontraining

On a diagram an HVAC installation is a set of lines. Cross-sections of units, media flow and an animation of the whole system in a building show how the solution works and why it is worth choosing. The presentation can be prepared from documentation before a prototype exists, and instructional films explain how to control entire systems.

Construction and structures

Insulation works hidden in walls, under floors and under the roof. An interactive cross-section model of a house shows every application of Knauf Therm products in one graphic and went onto the manufacturer's website as a presentation for customers. TLC steel structures, prepared from CAD files, are visible in full, at the scale of the hall.

No camera will see the cooling channels hidden inside a milling cutter. The Pokolm animation showed milling in cross-section and in slow motion, with engineering accuracy straight from CAD files. The same set served as trade show stand design, TV screen content and print graphics.

An implant procedure has to be explained clearly to a specialist and plainly to a patient, and its key moment happens inside the body. Transparent tissue and layered cross-sections show it without a drop of blood. For Sol-Millennium, the animations explained how the safety mechanism in the needle activates and served at once as advertising, instruction for clinical staff and trade show graphics.

Product explainer video

exploded viewproduct animationservice instruction

An explainer shows what a product is made of and how to use it, faster than a manual. For USTM, instructional films replaced paper manuals, and the same models produced advertising animations, packaging graphics and the look of the new website. The Tycner valve, built from a CAD file, is shown first as a whole and then in an exploded view.

What research says

The eye understands faster than words

The psychology of learning has long compared learning from text alone with learning from images and animation. The results are consistent: a well-designed image speeds up understanding and stays in memory longer, and animation helps most when learning procedures.

Speed of vision
0 ms

is enough for the brain to recognise an image

Study participants recognised the content of pictures shown for 13 milliseconds. It was previously thought that about 100 ms was needed. An image reaches the viewer before they can read the first word.

Procedures

is where animation's advantage is greatest

A meta-analysis of 26 studies found that animation teaches more effectively than a static drawing. The advantage grows with realistic animations and is greatest when a task has to be mastered: operation, assembly, a procedure.

Memory
Image > word

What is seen stays in memory longer

In a classic recognition test, participants recognised pictures they had seen more often than words they had read. Psychology calls this the picture superiority effect.

We explain complex technical processes in a simple way.

We show places a camera cannot reach. We create cross-section visualizations. We slow down what lasts a fraction of a second. We take machines apart. We show solutions before they exist.
Questions

Uses of 3D animation: frequently asked questions

What is 3D animation used for in engineering and industry?

It shows what cannot be filmed: the inside of a machine in cross-section, media flow, a process lasting a fraction of a second, or a solution that so far exists only in drawings. The same model built from CAD files then works in advertising, at trade shows, in a catalogue, in a manual and in training.

How does an interactive animation differ from a regular film?

A film plays from start to finish. An interactive animation is controlled by the viewer: they scroll, pause, rewind and return to the key phase of the process. It runs in the browser, so it works on a website, in an e-learning platform and on a touchscreen.

Is 3D animation suitable for training and e-learning?

Yes, especially where a task has to be mastered: operation, assembly or a procedure. Research on learning from images shows that this is exactly where animation's advantage over a static drawing is greatest.

How does a technical animation project start?

With CAD files and a conversation about who needs to be shown what. One model yields the animation, renders for print and versions for different screens. Read more about this form on our technical animation page.
